Strains of Streptococcus pyogenes from severe invasive infections bind HEp2 and HaCaT cells more avidly than strains from uncomplicated infections.

Epidemiologically unrelated Streptococcus pyogenes strains isolated from blood, throat, and skin were assayed for adherence to HEp2 and HaCaT cells. Invasive isolates showed significantly higher avidity for these cell lines than isolates from skin and throat. In general, S. pyogenes showed greater binding to HaCaT cells than to HEp2 cells.

Streptococcus pyogenes strains associated with invasive and non-invasive infections present possible links with emm types and superantigens

Objective(s): Streptococcus pyogenes, a notorious human pathogen is responsible to cause a wide range of infections varies from superficial common clinical illness to severe and life threatening infections. To our knowledge this is the first report exploring the emm types and superantigen/exotoxin gene profile of S. pyogenes from Pakistan. Materials a...

Increased expression of the ska gene in emm49-genotyped Streptococcus pyogenes strains isolated from patients with severe invasive streptococcal infections.

Since 2000, emm49-genotyped Streptococcus pyogenes strains have been isolated from patients with severe invasive group A streptococcal infections in Japan, although they had not been isolated before 1999. We compare the characteristics of these strains with those of strains isolated from patients with non-invasive infections. SmaI-digested pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles of the isolat...

[Streptococcus pyogenes infection in paediatrics: from pharyngotonsillitis to invasive infections].

BACKGROUND Streptococcus pyogenes or Group A Streptococci (GAS) cause many infections in infancy. Changes in its epidemiology have been described in recent years, including an increase in invasive infections (iGAS). METHODS A retrospective-descriptive study was conducted on children less than 15 years old, with GAS infections, in particular iGAS, and their complications from February 2004-Apr...
